I agree. I think it's more effective when used in a smart way (ie when you are not sure if the scene is the past, present, or future). I'm still wondering if the opening scene of Paths of Glory was meant to be a flashback or just "stating the facts" of the situation. And if it was a flashback, whose memory was it? Broulard's, Dax's, or Mireau's? Either way, what a great way to begin this fantastic movie.
