Y'know, geez...

This looks well acted and nicely shot...

BUT...

Does the world need another movie like this? It just strikes me as "indie cliche," y'know? We've been down this road numerous times.

I may be entirely wrong and the film turns out to be a masterpiece but...

...first impressions from the trailer and the marketing materials?

Same old, same old.

And that makes me sad. I think back to the glorious French New Wave when folks like Godard and Truffaut were forging new ground with such unbridled energy... just watch BREATHLESS and THE 400 BLOWS. Neither would cost an arm and a leg to make today.

And yet our "edgy indie" movies are always the same... a twenty something couple lost and trying to navigate their affairs of the heart.

I agree with Jeff. I think a lot of young filmmakers try to follow the "write what you know" thing- and end up with films that are all the same. Netflix Instant Stream is littered with unoriginal first time writer/director films that I can't seem to get to the end of, ever.
I think it's a question of originality of voice, not originality of subject matter- look at Raising Victor Vargas. A simple premise: a teenaged boy falls in love and pursues a girl. But the execution was wonderful, and completely engaging. The writer/director really put us inside this boy's life and world and turned it into a great film.

Also... that trailer was poorly cut. Is that her gay best friend or her boyfriend? What's the central conflict?
I have no clue.

A major rpoblem with indies is that they seem to be "genre-blind;" not meaning they don't concentrate on genre but they concentrate too much.

There are lots of theaters that will show movies but there's not much pomp and circumstance.

Indie film makers are competing with "endless" dollar streams so there needs to be some glitter.

Digital workflows take a LOT of the cost out of production and inexpensive 1080p cameras take away a lot more.
