It's a *little* cliched, but...

What if you opened the door to the afterlife and allowed all the spirits to cross back over. Imagine if all the souls of the people you'd lost suddenly flooded in - it'd be a happy renunion for some, but there'd also be an awful lot of bad feeling about, especially from those who were murdered or have had to watch their loved ones create new lives with new people.

The protagonist could spend the film desperately looking for a way to send the spirits back and seal the door. All while having to deal with their own "demons" and avoiding those who want the door to stay open.

There's a great Japanese film called AFTER LIFE which doesn't have a door, but deals with what happens after a person dies ... I highly recommend it, a great movie ...

There was a great sci-fi book on that subject called 'Immortality Incorporated', which was made into a straight to DVD abomination 'FreeJack'.

The basic idea was that science had found a way to get people to the afterlife guaranteed. None of that faith or belief stuff needed anymore.

If you can afford their fee, you are guaranteed a spot in here-after.

On the other hand, if there is an afterlife and they are guaranteed to get there, then murder is just a misdemeanor. After all - you've just given them a minor push to eternal happiness and bliss. Why would that be a crime?
