The Wachowskis did some comic books before The Matrix, and you can tell they used that training in writing the film. If you saw the storyboards for the movie, it looks exactly like it's written: the connecting punch, the gun firing, the kick, the moment with the most "oomph." So they wrote almost exactly what the boards would look like.
