I actually have to disagree about the formal education part. Sure, I did most if not all of my studies online, but when I have people who don't study CINEMA read my stuff, they never see the things that should be in a script, like scene transitions, character parallels\juxtaposition, etc.

I'd definitely recommend Mernit and Iglesias. Billy does story while Karl does characters\dialog.

I just don't think that screenwriters are in getting better in general which maybe why certain writers have their names everywhere (Orci, Kurtzman to name a few).

Perhaps to get an option or a sale you may be able to get away with not having an understanding of cinematic techniques but it takes hard formal work that can be explained to become a sought after writer for assignments where it's not your idea.
