Ford is a remarkable writer. If you can, pick up on his "The Sportswriter" and "Independence Day." Kind of like Updike's Rabbit books only bleaker!

(haven't read the third volume of the Bascombe books yet, The Lay of the Land, so I couldn't comment on that one...)
