That would be George, wouldn't it?

Thanks Scott – you can stop tipping your hat now, before your arm falls off!

I may eventually get around to typing out the whole thing, since (a) as I mentioned, the formatting in the published version is really annoying to read, and (b) I think it’s an interesting and worthwhile exercise. (I could have been sure that you’d suggested retyping favourite scripts as one of your ‘Dumb Tricks’, but I couldn’t find it on the list, so I guess I must have read it somewhere else.) I figure if I just put aside some time every day to type out 5-10 pages, I’d have it done it a few weeks. I’ll let you know if/when I get around to it.

Re the Beatles question: George, as co-founder of Handmade Films, gave the project the greenlight, and served as exec-producer. However, Ringo is also credited as ‘special production consultant’ (as Richard Starkey). I assume they didn’t have to pay anything for the rights to While My Guitar Gently Weeps!

Another nice bit of Withnail trivia: Robinson originally wrote the story as a novel, which was never published. Years later – some time in the 90s – the original manuscript fetched £6600 in a charity auction, when it was bought by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings, etc). Robinson: “A week later he sent it back to me with a note saying, ‘I think you should keep this,’ which is one of the sweetest gestures I’ve ever had happen to me. He’s a real gentleman, Mr Curtis, and one day I’m going to send him a bunch of white gladioli.”

Finally, in keeping with the Robinson/Grant theme, I’m going to have to nominate this speech from How to Get Ahead in Advertising for this week’s dialogue challenge.

Hi, Scott! Just created a wordpress account so I could thank you and Danny for sharing the scene descriptions from the Withnail and I screenplay along with some good insight. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Since buying the book is only a pipe dream for me at the moment and in the foreseeable future I've been searching the internet high and low for bits and pieces of the original screenplay and this here is like an early birthday present :D I read that Danny had plans of typing it all. I too would like to have an update (and a copy of it) if possible. Keeping my fingers crossed. Rio
