I'd definitely agree that visual-visual transitions are the best way to show time.

I've used going down steps and coming back up; Econ 201 then Econ 301; newspapers are a great technique also.

I actually haven't found as many sound-sound transitions, but I'm working on it.

Oh yeah, a popular example is Dead Poet's Society - though it won't work as well in a tropical clime - where they use the passage of seasons - maybe that's why I used calendars.

I think Red's VO in Shawshank with the intercut scenes is a great example of how to do right, which gives me something to aim for. I'm actually using title cards in my script and I'm not against montages, just any technique really done improperly can come off as hack-ish.

I really like the visual to visual idea. I hadn't realised how common those are but I think I can put a little spin on it and use it in my script. I'll hopefully publish an excerpt using my transition on the boards as soon as I get it done and am happy with it...who knows how long that could take.
