I write the best at my computer. When its still and I just emerse myself in the story I'm writing. BUT I've found I can write in ANY circumstace: in coffee shops, in the library, in the midst of family, in rouge environments with my labtop. I used to sit on the couch with the computer in my lap, but now that I have an actual office I go in there and write at the desk, where my laptop is officially stationed. That way everything around me is writing related and I won't get distracted.

It occurred to me early on in my decision to become a professional writer that there’s a lot of shit that can get in the way of the dream. I wasn’t going to let environment be one of them. I quickly mastered writing anywhere, with any tool I have handy, using whatever time I have available. Sometimes I’ve gotten more done scribbling notes on the back of a receipt waiting at the doctor’s office than three hours of quiet at home.

I thought everyone wrote on a laptop in Starbucks...

I write in my home office at my computer. Usually with iTunes playing at a low volume and with the door locked and the wife advised to leave me be.

I think when I do that she has visions of me becoming Jack Torrance and coming in after me to find a stack of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" pages.

I used to only write when I felt like writing.

Then I only wrote at night, when it was very quiet.

Then I started trying to write during the day, and I could do that, as long as it was quiet.

After that, I got a laptop and I started writing while sitting on the couch while my son did his homework.

Now I can write while my son is playing a video game or while he is reading out loud right next to me.

I've always figured that to be a true professional, you have to be able to write under any circumstances.

I still need quiet, but now I can create the quiet in my own head. I don't need actual quiet anymore. :)

In bed with the Detroit Tigers on the TV. Hopefully I never have a disappointment in screenwriting that even approaches my disappointment with the Tigers last year.
