Can you explain why we should "despise adverbs"
Jeff at 2010-01-11 14:15:25:
Because "jeff &amp" they are, in most instances, unnecessary. While I think the occasional use of an adverb or two is acceptable, they are the definition of "filler." Great for term papers, not so good for anything else.

This was something I required a complete overhaul on - - I used to TOTALLY, COMPLETELY , and UTTERLY abuse adverbs.

As I'm sure can SURELY tell...

Hey Jeff &amp, for more information about those lazy adverbs, you can check out my article here: http://scriptwrecked.com/2009/10/26/avoid-adverbs/

Hope that helps!

@jeff &amp: Other folks have weighed in sufficiently on the subject. I can only add two things: (1) The reason I'm quite persnickety about adverbs is all the times I see something like "he walks quickly" in a script when there are literally dozens of stronger, better verbs -- speeds, hustles, bustles, skips, leaps, jumps -- that provide more fuel for the reader's visual senses. (2) Stephen King has said this: "The road to hell is paved with adverbs." And nobody wants to piss off Mr. King!
