Seems like the

(Southern accent)

that accompanies "Dorothy's" first line of dialogue is a very necessary bridge in this example. It provides an intentional behavioural change for Michael, something we can see that's new on his part as he takes on this new role.

@Daniel: I'm not a fan of parentheticals as I think they are overused by aspiring screenwriters, however this is a case - per your point - where it is both necessary and works.
