YES. I've always been a huge fan of Cameron because he's one of the very few big-name filmmakers who actually creates interesting, strong, independent female characters. Unlike that stupid jerk, Michael Bay. God, I hate him.

I hope Avatar is a huge hit, too. I'm so sick of remakes, sequels, prequels, blah blah blah!

That New Yorker article makes Cameron seem really unlikable.

I don't care for what I've seen of AVATAR to date (FERNGULLY meets ALIENS as done by George Lucas about covers it), and I wasn't too impressed by Cameron's scriptment, either (let's face it, Cameron has never been a particularly inventive storyteller). I'm hoping the film wins out in the end, but so far, I'm a skeptic.

I read this piece a few days ago and it totally blew me away. Probably one of the best filmmaker profiles I've ever read.

Cameron is a complete animal, a total slave to his passions. And that's a good thing for US.

Talk about "going into the story," this guy spirals into it, through it, and out the other side.

It would appear that I may have the opportunity to direct a film of my own script soon... nothing concrete but there are talks... and, as devoted as I am to my work, I'm far too much of a wimp to explode into the extreme like James Cameron does.

James Cameron. TOTAL STUD. Pioneer. Sounds like a bit of a perfectionist, but dudes and dudettes isn't that a GOOD THING?! Don't you wish James Cameron's attributes where taken up by more filmmakers in the US today? I do.
He's advancing the art. Demanding the best from those around him. I don't know about you, but I would would take daily lashings from the man to be on the cutting edge of brillance.

Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, George Lucas: the pinnacle of filmmakers in our generation. To work with ANY of them at ANY level is the utmost honor. Better than getting an Oscar.

Can't wait to see "Avatar." Going to see it with my family when it comes out.

Ryan, haha Ferngully has always been the butt of my jokes.

I'm pretty skeptical myself. Cameron always impresses, but human cgi never looks good to me. They just come across as too fake and airbrushed. Even Benjamin Button looked kind of tacky and it got all that cgi praise.

God I LOVED this profile, it was totally engrossing. I totally agree with the whole strong female leads thing, even though I tend to think his movies are a little hokey.

But he sounds like a lunatic. An amazing lunatic. I'm fascinated by this type of lunatic. Part of the reason I want to get into the movies is because of all the wackos involved in making them. Not sure I would want to work for Cameron, but I'd give my right arm to be a fly on the wall during a James Cameron shoot, or to sit next to him at a dinner party.

You're entittled to your opinion, but Speilberg, Cameron, and Lucas's moives speak for themself. Big budget hits galore -- AND they're advancing the medium benefiting all who follow after them. I say these three guys are the true pioneers of modern cinema.

They led, others follow.

THUS, I believe, they deserve laud. But if you disagree you can always site your own film making heros, then build a case why you think such choices trump the ones I sited: Speilberg, Cameron, and Lucas. Good luck with that!

Oh and I would have to remind you, EC, that the trifecta of filmmakers you mentioned are standing on the shoulders of the true giants...

LUCAS = Kurosawa
SPIELBERG = Hitchcock (with a dash of Capra?)
CAMERON = a John Ford/John Sturges/Sam Peckinpah hybrid

terminator & terminator 2 are among the reasons i fell in love with movies. period.
