So Hollywood has basically decided to get out of the movie-making business.

What will they do now? Sell cars?

I hear that's not such a good racket these days either...

Jeff, it's pretty crazy. Because each of the major studios have a distribution network. And the upkeep on that network, largely in the form of salaries to personnel, requires a daily infusion of cash. If the studios cut back on the product flowing through their distribution network, that would suggest that, unless the movies generate an equivalent gross income as before, they'll run a deficit. That's why in the 'old day,' the studios used to produce and funnel as much product through their distrib networks as possible (it was only a few years ago when Disney was routinely producing 40 movies per year).

It just feels like Hwood is in retrenchment mode all around, whether it makes sense or not.

Well, I'm certainly not an expert, but this seems like a really stupid idea.
