This is somewhat similar to a documentary from about a decade ago,
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, about a homeless musician and a flock of wild parrots in San Francisco. IMDB says it grossed a little over $3M which isn't bad for what was likely a micro-budget doc. Add some name cast (perhaps older to appeal to that demographic) to a well-crafted story with the parrots and as a low-budget indie, it could do pretty well.
