Not a big fan of the movie but one bit of great dialog has stuck with me all these years. Describing the heat in Mississippi, Matthew Broderick says “It’s hot. Like Africa hot. Tarzan couldn’t take this kind of hot.”

That was my other choice for DD. Re Daily Dialogue, I'm not necessarily picking great movies - in fact many of them are just good or even poor. Rather trying to hit (A) movies I've seen, (B) not repeat myself (that is every movie in the DD series is different), and (C) obviously try to find some interesting dialogue.

I agree Biloxi Blues isn't Simon at his best (on film -- the play has done very well through the years). It is interesting, however, because it's one of Simon's most - at least - 'semi-autobiographical' movies.

Say what you want about the film itself (I'm a HUUUUGE fan of this one), but ya' gotta' admit, almost EVERY other line could land on your DD series Scott. Wayyyy too many keepers in this one. Almost everything that comes out of Sgt. Toomey (played to perfection by Walken) is gold. And the exchanges in the barracks between Arnold Epstein and Eugene are remarkable.

The scene where Eugene's diary is taken from him and everyone digs for dirt on themselves is one of the most tense and harrowing sequences I've ever seen, and Eugene and Toomey's face-off in the latrine no less so.

Mike Nichols direction seemed spot on to me. A bit stagey perhaps but, y'know, that's always an issue when going play-to-film, eh?

Great choice. This movie has had a special place in my heart ever since I randomly watched it on HBO maybe 10 years ago. Definitely nostalgic.

Peter, don't you love it when you're flipping through the movie channels and you happen to catch a movie you haven't seen - and it's great? It's like this gift you've been given, serendipity, the movie gods looking kindly upon you.

Of course, then there are those times when you just can't force yourself to stop watching a piece of crap movie...
