I wonder how the five primary character archetypes would fit here. Maybe: Protagonist: Shared between Mark Baum (Steve Carell), Michael Burry (Christian Bale), Charlie Geller (John Magaro) and Jamie Shipley (Finn Wittrock) Nemesis (antagonist): the banks, represented by several characters. Attractor (romance): ?? Profits? Money? Not sure about this one. Mentor (wisdom): Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt) - only for Geller and Shipley. Trickster: Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling) Thinking a little bit about it maybe we should consider it as three different stories, each with a different protagonist: 1)Mark Baum 2)Michael Burry 3)Charlie Geller and Jamie Shipley All held together by a main narrator (Jared Vennett)

I saw the cameo speeches where they break the 4th wall and talk directly to the audience as a modern day extension of the roll of the Greek chorus. In this case, the role of the "chorus of cameos" was not so much to comment on the action, but to explain it, to help the audience understand the financial legerdemain driving the action.
