My strategy is to explore every avenue available, which means queries, contests, and Black List. For queries, I did the same as Ben; signed up for IMDBpro trial runs more than once, and have even used different names. I keep all of the information I find in a spreadsheet and try to update it at least once a year because reps tend to move around so much.
What worked (at the moment) was Black List. I'm currently building a relationship with a manager that found me there. I wrote a good script, got solid reader reviews that led to industry downloads, and out of the blue the manager contacted me.
Point being, it really does come down to the writing. If you write something really, really good and put it somewhere people can see it, you raise your chances of them coming to you.
