Agreed, Paul. Every character IS the Protagonist in THEIR story. Therefore they will have a world view which WORKS FOR THEM. They will have goals which are IMPORTANT TO THEM. The single best way to uncover conflict in a story, indeed, from scene to scene is to zero in on each character's goals. That's why my principle is: Conflict = Goals Conflicting goals. Which is aligned with what Fincher says: Everyone is RIGHT. In their minds, at least. Makes for a much more dynamic situation which we can mine as writers... and maximize entertainment as a result.
