My initial comment re our discussion of Gone Girl this week is to revisit my impressions upon watching the movie when it first came out: What genre is it? Drama? Thriller?
At the end of the day, I'm comfortable with this designation: Satire. It's like a post-modern Fatal Attraction taken from the perspective of the femme fatale, especially with the switch of narrative to Amy's point-of-view. Also American Beauty comes to mind, peeling back the veneer of upper middle class civility.
The sheer audacity of Amy's plan and the stupidity of her husband, combined with the all of the press fascination about the case, if you look at the story through the lens of satire, I think that fits like a glove.
