Through GITS I've become pumped about District 9. And sadly i think GI Joe is going to be huge flop as well. Previews showing running and flying around in super robot suits? that's not GI Joe!!

# 2) "Julie and Julia." Meryl Streep is SO COOL. See makes every show she's in worth seeing. Throw in Amy Adams. Sure I'll give it a shot!

"G.I. Joe" looks like "Transformers" two months later. Been seeing a lot of TV trailers for "A Perfect Getaway." Hawaii looks like the "perfect gettaway" for me in a couple months... The setting for a psycopathic killer moive? Not-so-much...

What about Taking Woodstock? I'm definitely planning on seeing that pretty shortly after it opens, as well as Post Grad, Ponyo, and probably Paper Heart.

Nothing else looks remotely interesting to me, but I'm not into action, horror, or sappy romance, so I'm a pretty terrible barometer.

It'll be close between GI Joe and District 9. D9 may win out because of the underlying message of acceptance vs. rejection.

But then GI Joe is ACTION, ACTION so it may have better legs with the fanfolks.

Ponyo is where my money will be going in the month of August.

Though I must say, Disney is out of their minds if they think they're going to line their pockets with this one. I've had the good fortune to have screened it already and it's everything you'd expect from Miyazaki and Ghibli but it owes more to his earlier works, most notably My Neighbor Totoro. The film is charming but for those not familiar with Ghibli style storytelling it will be far too surreal a ride.

(my God, though, wait 'til you guys see it... the colors are breathtaking, it's like Miyazaki used a palate of electric watercolors or something... staggering to look at)

Of course, District 9 looks utterly compelling and certainly runs a close second in the our local multiplex's race for my wallet.

I wish this country was worldly enough to appreciate Miyazaki in the original Japanese, and not these A-lister voice-over versions.

I agree with you Luzid. Christian Bale in Howl's moving castle was too ridiculous. He was talking like batman 90% of the movie. Hmm it just dawned on me that Michael Keaton did the Porco Rosso dub, someone must think deeper japanese voices sound like batman haha.

My children adore Miyazaki films. Totoro was the first movie they sat thru and watched completely captivated and absorbed (we saw it on DVD), and that was hard for four kids ages 2-5 who pratically were sugarballs of energy and were used to the fast-paced animation of Spongebob. So, my personal dough will go to Ponyo.

I refuse to see GI Joe though I was huge fan of the toys and cartoons, a collector even, since I am a true 80's child. The trailers have not revved up those feelings of nostalgia, and I'm not convinced it'll be anything more than an extention of the Michale Bay Transformers franchise. Especially if they don't get Snake Eyes and Shadow Storm right. Cannot forget a misstep with those two characters.

Might check out District 9. So, it's Ponyo and District 9 for my dollars.

But I think money makers will be District 9, and sadly GI Joe if it gets that Transformers 2 audience to show up.
