I'm a huge Billy Wilder fan and to me, Trainwreck stands in the great tradition of Wilder comedies: Smart, funny, human.
Here is a dialogue exchange in Trainwreck:
AMY
What’s wrong with you that you want
to be with me? I’m a drinker.
AARON
I don’t care.
AMY
I’ve been with a lot of guys.
AARON
I don’t care. How many?
AMY
I don’t know. How many girls have
you slept with?
AARON
I’ve slept with three women.
AMY
Me too. I have slept with three
women too.
AARON
How many guys?
AMY
This year?
Compare to the ending of Some Like It Hot:
Jerry: Oh no you don't! Osgood, I'm gonna level with you. We can't get married at all.
Osgood: Why not?
Jerry: Well, in the first place, I'm not a natural blonde.
Osgood: Doesn't matter.
Jerry: I smoke! I smoke all the time!
Osgood: I don't care.
Jerry: Well, I have a terrible past. For three years now, I've been living with a saxophone player.
Osgood: I forgive you.
Jerry: [tragically] I can never have children!
Osgood: We can adopt some.
Jerry: But you don't understand, Osgood! Ohh...
[Jerry finally gives up and pulls off his wig]
Jerry: [normal voice] I'm a man!
Osgood: [shrugs] Well, nobody's perfect!
Great stuff. I think Wilder would have liked Trainwreck a lot.
