I'm probably speaking out of turn here as I have not yet had a chance to read "The Beaver" but from the description you posted last week I immediately thought of "Harvey."

Again, based on the description alone I would say "The Beaver" is more (to use a literary term) magic realism than "Harvey" but it might just feel that way because it is as you point out a modern take.

I would really like to see "The Beaver" produced but then I've always been drawn to weird movies that don't necessarily have huge box office success.
