What bothers me about the concept expressed here is the suggestion that fighting depression is just a matter of trying harder. If your psychiatrist did this to you, they would lose their license. This is not how you talk to people with depression. It does a disservice to those of us who suffer from depression; it belittles us and makes it sound like it's our fault.

I hear you, Chris. However in defense of the movie, it's a comedy and so the scene is played largely for comic relief. Moreover my guess is the filmmakers probably didn't think of Annie as being clinically depressed, rather just in a temporary state of 'being blue' based on a bad run of recent events. But your point is well-taken and thanks for sharing your perspective.

You're absolutely right, Scott. I lost my focus a little because I'm dealing with these issues myself right now. You did say the daily theme was depression, not clinical depression. And you're right, many people can overcome periods of depression before they become clinical depression, and that's a good thing.
