Far be it from me to argue with THE filmmaker we all refer to as the master, but, in regards to his quote about putting the horror in the minds of the audience -- but while an effective choice, is this not an outdated model in today's cinema?

We saw the effect of the shark in the first scene (JAWS)... sure the shark was in our minds... but we saw what happened to the girl swimmer... how about that scene with "little Alex Kitner", when he's attacked it looks like they used hundreds of gallons of fake blood to create that effect...

Is this "in the minds of the audience" and not on screen an outdated theory?

How about in the NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST when Tina was dragged across the ceiling? That was one of the scariest scenes I've ever seen and it's pretty much on screen.

Again... open for discussion. While we shouldn't doubt the master's theory... does it still hold true in today's jaded audience?
