Met this guy at a screenwriting expo at Northwestern U. back around '96 or so. Very cool, very down to Earth, had a ton of great advice and anecdotes.

I'll never forget some yahoo in the front row who started bitching and moaning about how three act structures were "artistically limiting" and a thing of the past. Duncan finally threw his arms up and said, "hey, go ahead, do what you want, the world needs starving artists too!"

Shame you don't see much from him anymore. Both Holland and Courage were phenominal scripts!

Jeff, that's a great comeback by Duncan. It reminds me of the story I heard about the great composer Stravinsky who was asked by a student if he didn't feel "restricted" by being forced to compose using only the 88 note of the piano. Stravinsky replied, "Not at all. These 88 notes provide shape to my creative universe. Without them, I would be lost. With them, I have total freedom to create."
