Totally agree on how a script can read well, but feel different on the screen, and vice-versa. Starting to see that already in my reading. Also, yeppers on the idea of "I can do that!" ... it was listening to Marc Maron's interviews with writers of all kinds that finally got me to think I should push myself into this space ... "if they could do it ..." it was an absolute confidence-builder. I can imagine what it must've been like for John to have had friends achieve the goal he wanted for himself as well ... even more powerful. Love the pancakes story! ;-)

I can't tell you how many times I've heard a screenwriter who, working as an assistant or script reader, after reading tons of scripts, almost all of them crappy, said, "I can do this." One of the side benefits of reading scripts! A lot more to come in John's interview!
