YES! My favorite concert film of all time.

An unparalleled celebration of American music, this movie. Part of my favorite stretch of Scorcese's career, from this to the prophetic and hilarious/terrifying The King of Comedy to the surreal/sidesplitting After Hours.

This was Marty at his best.

I love The Band and I love The Last Waltz. Sad about Richard Manuel and Rick Danko, but great to see Levon Helm survive cancer and resurrect his career with these Sat nite home concerts he's been doing for several years now. If you haven't checked out his new albums, here is a taste.

Helm also has one of the greatest quotes of all time: "Music doesn't owe anybody a living." I've always remembered that -- as a musician myself (for 7 years), then a stand-up comic (for 2 years), then screenwriting for over 20 years). Anybody who manages to eke out a living in the 'arts,' it's a gift, not a right.
