I've tried various methods. Early on, I generate little notes, lines of dialogue, moments, bits of business, character tics, shots. Later, I like index cards, 'cause they're easy to move around. Final Draft will generate cards. But timelines are also handy for following the timing of scenes, synchronizing sub-plots, following the rise and fall of action. I've never tried story boarding; it strikes me as too time-consuming.

As you suggest, Jeff, there is no one set way to write a screenplay. We have to be open to try "various methods". Part of that is simply about exploring who we are as writers and finding what works for us. But even then, we need to respect the magical nature of the storytelling process. I call writing a story -- "wrangling magic". It can be infuriating at times when we can't seem to 'find' the story. However without the magical element, we end up with formulas, not stories.
