These are great observations, and helpful to keep in mind. My one other takeaway is that I'm glad a rom com has gotten some traction this summer. I know it's a bit old fashioned, but rom com is still my favorite genre! THANKS!

Susan, whether Hollywood refers to them as 'rom-coms' or 'comedies with romance,' the latter being more popular as a way of soft-pedaling the supposed weakness of rom-coms in today's marketplace, I believe this sub-genre will work its way back into prominence. First off, entertainment is all about cycles, so what goes down almost invariably comes back up. Second, there are SO MANY great female comic actresses nowadays, projects will emerge for them, and that will almost certainly include an increase in rom-coms. Third, one thing we can say about Trainwreck is that while the story itself is quite traditional, Schumer's comic sensibilities are not. She manages to do what male comedies with romance have done for some time: mix raunch with romance. Certainly Apatow's involvement facilitated this in a huge way, but it's Schumer's comfort level embracing awkward sexual humor combined with no fear in veering into strong R-rated material projects to a more - shall we say - post-modern version of rom-coms. Finally some studies have shown that while women represent 52% of the American population, they actually make up 54% of moviegoing audience. That 8% gap between female and male moviegoers, at some point even the dullest blade of a studio exec will see the wisdom in widening their slate to include more projects which target females as a target audience, and one would think a sizable number of those projects will be rom-coms / comedies with romance. That's my theory. Let's see if pans out. The success of Trainwreck suggests it will.
