This has to be one of those rare times when lightning strikes and creates perfection... perfection with an abby-normal brain, of course.

This is Mel Brooks at the absolute top of his game. This is Gene Wilder, still hungry, writing a flawless script. This is giants like Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Kenny Mars, Peter Boyle, and Cloris Leachman acting their heart and souls out.

What sets this spoof apart from most others, even Brooks' later attempts, is that even though it is gag filled, it still has a point and a heart. It doesn't forego character just for the sake of a cheap gag.

THIS, friends, is how to do great comedy and it should be studied and cherished forever.

So, uh, you think I'm a fan of this movie or what?

Still one of the greatest comedy bits of all time.

Great stuff - I remember nearly wetting myself when I saw this scene for the first time

Young Frankenstein is one of my favourite shows. I know all the words by heart so it was nice to remember again in your post. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories about Young Frankenstein . This weekend I’m going to visit my sister and we get pretty good tickets to attend it again so I'll be analyzing as well as enjoying that show. Here:

Mel was extremely skeptical about this scene. There's an interview with him saying that he didn't see how this scene could be funny at all. He approached Gene and asked him about it. Gene went through the entire scene with him and eventually sold him on the idea. Mel said, "Okay, I just wanted to be sure that YOU thought it was funny."

The rest is history. When I think of this movie, I think of this scene. There are dozens of potent quotables to be sure, but this scene is the one we remember.
