One if the biggest criticisms I get from readers is that they can't sympathize with the protagonist. One of the other criticisms I get is that the material is disturbing. Aren't these two of the rules often broken by great writers? Aren't these types of criticisms personal value judgements? I mean, any reader will have their personal preferences. They may prefer sweetness and light. But does that mean disturbing and unsympathetic won't sell? HBO. Hello.
