How I love this scene! One of my favorites in the movie. And despite McKee's disclaimer, most aspiring writers I exchange notes with still view voice-over as a taboo.

It's an awesome moment, Paul, taking the whole meta thing to another level. Re V.O. narration: Perhaps it's time for me to reprise the series I did a year or two ago about it and flashbacks. I contend the issue isn't whether a screenwriter CAN use either narrative device, rather SHOULD they use it. There is no RULE against using them. The negativity about them is, I think, almost exclusively about how poorly they are used in a majority of scripts that funnel through the Hollywood acquisition system. But if the story CALLS for the use of V.O. narration and/or flashbacks, and the writer uses them WELL, that's a no-brainer. Do it. If they enhance the story, it would be DUMB not to use them!
