Since 8 1/2 was mentioned, I should toss out it's bastard American cousin, Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories."

Much maligned because folks thought it was Woody giving them the finger, it actually is one of his finest films.

@Mike--I was racking my brain for that one. I went through a big Nicholas Ray phase a while back and that may be my favorit.

@David--Not so sure about 8 1/2 because there is a separate writer character. I think of him pretty much as a director, although he clearly is in charge of the story creation aspect.
