This was a device I used in my award winning screenplay, Diamond is a Girl's Best Friend. Now, if I can just get it financed... ;)

Road to Bali (1952) Writers: Frank Butler (screenplay & story), Hal Kanter (screenplay), William Morrow (screenplay) and Harry Tugend (story) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x51oxt_paramount-wouldn-t-dare_fun (George and Harold are leaning on a tree branch while dreamily watching Princess Lala as she swims. The branch breaks away but the two men remain suspended in mid-air above the water.) George: How come we don't fall? Harold: Paramount wouldn't dare. At your age? George: (Laughs) Shall we then? Harold: Inhale. (They take deep breaths and rise to erect positions, with all the attendant sexual connotations.) We often think of breaking the fourth wall as the actor addressing the audience directly, but it can also mean simply paying attention to uncanny events in-universe, thus also reminding us we're watching a movie. The Hope/Crosby Road To movies were rife with this kind of comedy.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Writer: Earl Mac Rauch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpVXpCNFOSg New Jersey: Why is there a watermelon there? Reno Nevada: I'll tell you later. Short scene from one of my favorite cult films. Here's another example of putting undue focus on an in-universe item that pulls us out of the movie and makes us aware at the I'm-in-a-theater level. While hunting aliens that have invaded the labs of the Hong Kong Cavaliers, New Jersey asks about a watermelon that is placed among all the high-tech lab gear. This is a completely non-sequitur scene that has nothing to do with the plot (or what plot this movie actually has). It's as if the set dressers simply wanted to see what would happen if they put something odd in the set. If you look closely at Pepe Serna's expression he almost seems to stifle a laugh.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it- Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) http://movieclips.com/xtkF-ferris-buellers-day-off-movie-life-moves-pretty-fast/ Takeaway - The protagonist turns to the camera and tells you the movie's conceit. Simple! Catnip for teenagers in 1986.

Scott, you pulled a switch on us. I thought it was Dating this week. I had to scramble to find a 4th wall example. Movie - Blazing Saddles Youtube - https://youtu.be/JMK6lzmSk2o Buddy's Singers: [singing] Throw up your hands/Stick out your tush/Hands on your hips/Give 'em a push/You'll be surprised, you're doing the French Mistake/Voila! Buddy Bizarre: Alright, CUT. [yells into the ear of a dancer] WRONG! [hits the dancer on the head] Buddy Bizarre: Ok, Just watch me! It's so simple! You sissy-marys. Give me the playback! And, watch me, faggots! [does dance but falls into water at end] Buddy Bizarre: Shit. Have you got it? [the actors answer with a heavily lisping "yethhhh"] Buddy Bizarre: Sounds like steam escaping. Action! Oh, wait till I get out! Wait till I get out! Ok, playback. [the dancers start the routine again but are interrupted by the fight breaking through the wall.] Buddy Bizarre: CUT! What in the hell do you think you’re doing here? This is a closed set. Taggert: Piss on you, I’m working for Mel Brooks. [He’s ready to punch Buddy in the face] Buddy Bizarre: Not in the face. [Taggert punches him in the stomach] Buddy Bizarre: Thank-you. Dancer: They hit Buddy! Come on, girls! Comment - One of the more entertaining and literal breaking of the fourth wall from the master of breaking that barrier - Mel Brooks.

Can a protagonist turn to a camera without knowing its there and still be performing a fourth wall moment? If so then this one's for free. "That one's for free" Truman Show (1998) http://movieclips.com/Pi6H7-the-truman-show-movie-that-ones-for-free/ Log: An insurance salesman discovers his entire life is actually a TV show.
