This is an interesting quote and something I've often wondered about. A friend of mine asked me once why I only had male protags and I had no answer for her. Then my life changed, I became more "me" than ever and lo and behold, my protags became female... I'm hoping that things will even out eventually and that the most interesting character will win out regardless of gender. It's a learning process all the way.

Marija, interesting shift for you. The bigger note per Straughan's comments: We should all open ourselves to switching genders in our storytelling. As he indicates, roles which may seem stale in a male gender become fresh with a female. Likewise a role we might traditionally cast as a female could become more intriguing if we write it as a male. On one level, this is about diversity. On another level, it's about finding and developing the most interesting characters possible.
