I used to be a huge Bergman fan in the self-induced despair of my youth, but as I get older, I'm more of a Fellini fan--maybe I'm drawn to the warmth of Fellini's absurdism, as opposed to Bergman's cold 'silence of God'. Having said that, I'm kind of fond of "The Magician"--although "Persona" and "Winter Light" are close. Damn, it's been a while, maybe it's time for a home video retrospective...

Same one, FANNY AND ALEXANDER, though honestly I haven't seen all his films ... but I really like that one.

Anybody see the TV mini-series Bergman wrote and directed "Scenes From a Marriage?" Supposedly when it first aired in 1973, something like 80% of the households in Sweden tuned into it. More info here.

Of course, part of the appeal of Bergman movies is the incomparable Liv Ullman, who starred in several of his projects (including "Scenes From a Marriage.")
