I think good, well-crafted and well-told stories tend to naturally follow the "rules" of good screenwriting.

Besides most everyone likes a good story.

Let's remember that Slumdog is not entirely a Cinderella story. It had a number of things in its favor:

•a pedigree director in Danny Boyle

•international bestselling source material in the Vikas Swarup novel

•and the largest built-in audience on earth, the Bollywood audience...

But I take your point about its stunning mainstream success and Warner Bros. should be kicking themselves.
