I wouldn't jump to say this year was second best of the last ten. Although that is quite a small sample in terms of what anyone would call good or great movies anyway. I think The Matrix was probably the last great movie. Year after year of progressively lesser quality has the 'frog in the kettle on the stove effect.' We gradually call something good that we never would have in the past. Compare that same movie to what we called good, ten or twenty years ago. When was the last Chinatown, Sundance, Godfather, Shawshank? Give a studio reader one of those scripts today. There is no way any one of them would get a pass, let alone greenlit. Yes, superior is a good word. We have superior movies. Superior to what?

Superior to no movies at all, I suppose. It's totally subjective, so I don't think there's a definitive answer. There is one highly rated 2014 film that I consider the longest, slowest montage in the history of the industry, with no moments. As to whether it's superior to no movie at all, I'd have to give that some thought.
