I wouldn't jump to say this year was second best of the last ten. Although that is quite a small sample in terms of what anyone would call good or great movies anyway. I think The Matrix was probably the last great movie.
Year after year of progressively lesser quality has the 'frog in the kettle on the stove effect.' We gradually call something good that we never would have in the past. Compare that same movie to what we called good, ten or twenty years ago.
