I saw this movie back in my early 20's and didn't give it much thought. I was too into Goddard at the time and was kind of immune to this film's heart in favor of Goddard's cocky nihilism. Ahh, to be single and twenty...

I just rewatched it last night, oddly enough, as it had run on TCM a few days ago and I DVR'd it.

Wow.

The greatest.

Unbelievable.

Can't get it out of my head.

TCM is great. For instance, this week you can see Lawrence of Arabia, True Grit, Annie Hall, Gilda, Stagecoach, It Happened One Night, the silent movie Speedy, and the epic bomb Heaven's Gate. And that's just with a quick perusal of their schedule.

Scott, I'm with you on TCM--not only the great old movies (and some delightfully lousy ones), but the silents, foreign and cult movies as well--they do a hell of a job. I mourn the day AMC went commercial. Speaking of Lawrence of Arabia, one of my favorite scenes ever is from that movie--funny, plot advancing, and absolutely character establishing. Also, "the trick is not minding that it hurts" is the wedding advice I give to all my friends.

John, with so many of the cable nets moving toward scripted fare, even the movie ones (e.g., Starz, Showtime, HBO), it's still rather startling to think of what used to be American Movie Classics now host to Breaking Bad, Money Men, and a ton of scripted shows in development.

Re Lawrence of Arabia: I concur. Here's a thought. Have any interest in writing something up about the scene and we can feature it as next Friday's Great Scene? I'll get the script text, you've provided the link to the scene, with your commentary, we could have a winner.

Consider it an experiment. Maybe we open Great Scenes to GITS readers.
