Leviathan is a really strong movie, a favorite from 2014.
The 'Best screenplay' award at Cannes is well deserved : from a melodramatic main narrative, the story succeeds in depicting an epic confrontation between great "human forces" : the force of a solitary man fighting for survival versus the force of the established power.
Actors convey these forces and what gravitates around them with deep interpretations. Lilya for instance is memorable as a caring yet unfaithful wife, and has the presence to carry the melodramatic apex of the film.
Leviathan shares with A Touch of Sin a certain "sour rawness" that's not often seen these days in marketed movies. Like the Chinese masterpiece of last year, Leviathan also doesn't fail at creating comic situations. A dialogue between the mayor and his subordinates is very well done in this regard.
Back to the script: it IS really tight and masterful. It is actually the kind of movie that makes you realize how good a script can be. I would love reading a good translation of it. Do you have any idea where I could find it Scott ?
