Here is one takeaway I got from this week's discussion: Simple story, complex character. Prisoner's story cannot be more simple at its base: Parents searching for kidnapped children. Horrible fear all parents have. Add ticking clock. Five days or odds for finding kids drop significantly.
Now add complex characters. Keller. Loki. Keller's wife. Franklin. His wife. Alex. Each character has layers of stuff going on and NONE of them is without 'sin'.
Complex characters against the backdrop of a simple story. The simple story sucks in a reader straightaway. The complex characters keep them engaged.
That was my big takeaway.
How about you?
