Obviously this kind of thing is way up my alley. Your mash-up idea immediately made me think of that 2011 Three Musketeers 3D movie which turned out to be one of the more pleasant surprises I've had in a movie theater. I remember one of the reviews for it saying (complaining?) that they turned the Three Musketeers into The A-Team, so your Charlie's Angels idea is a perfect compliment to that, with those steampunk elements still in there, obviously. I'm also reminded of all the fine ladies on Game Of Thrones, so in regards to timing it seems like as good a time as any to pursue something like this (I will admit that I've been trying to figure out my own contemporary version of this for a while, I just had the right characters for this kind of thing waiting). The thing about the Charlie's Angels movies though was how well they were cast, I mean, look back on it and you have the trio, obviously, but you also have Bill Murray as Bosley, you have a young Sam Rockwell, Tim Curry as the guy we expect to be the villain, Crispin Glover, Matt LeBlanc in a minor role (and acting against John Cleese in the sequel), Tom Green as Drew's boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf before he was anyone, Robert Patrick, Justin Thereoux, even Melissa McCarthy was in the first one! So following that lead, this movie would need a ton of interesting, funs idea characters to just be actor bait, and realistically there's got to be a lot of those if you're going on an odyssey through civil war France. Blatantly stealing from another project of mine, I can totally see Monica Bellucci as that version of Catherine DeMedici (kind of obvious, but this isn't a subtle movie), you have tons of actresses who would be interesting as the Flying Squadron, Rosie Huntington-Whitely as this refined thing going on, Summer Glau could be a waifish Lady, Jamie Chung because it's pretty much a requirement at this point (Devon Aoki seems more regal and unusual, but I haven't seen her in anything for a while), Caitlin Stasey as an ass-kicking farm girl, Rose Leslie because we all want more Ygritte in our lives... Of course, it's the olden says so there's lots of fun you can have with the whole' "using their physical charms" (wet ankle contest!) it seems like the kind of movie that wouldn't actually HAVE nudity or sex scenes in it, but more of that "accidental" nudity like comic books in the 90s had, where there's always a branch or an arm or something obstructing our view. Plus Renaissance, so there's GOT to be a scene or something where the girls dress up as guys and guys dress up as girls, our little Shakespeare tribute. The only thing is... I don't know if those kind of juvenile things still fly in the world of tomorrow that is 2015. If movies like that were still okay, wouldn't they still be making them? Or do they make them and I just don't notice? I feel like you couldn't do this sort of thing without having some responsibility to make it not "dumb male entertainment." Like, can you make a movie like this and actually have it be feminist? I wonder. The only way I can think of right now to make that work is if the Flying Squadron are escorting a young, sheepish priest/monk through war-torn France, a Midnight Run-style mission. He's constantly protesting about their wicked ways and what a woman should be, and they can counter back about what a man should be, teach him chivalry and manners and how to sword fight and stuff like that.
