Rango (2011) Writers: John Logan, Gore Verbinski, James Ward Byrkit Rango (Johnny Depp) is a pretender who tells tall tales so others will like him. He convinces the good but gullible people of the town of Dirt that he's a true western hero and they make him sheriff. That all works fairly well until a real gunslinger, Rattlesnake Jake (Bill Nighy) arrives, who calls out Rango's true nature in a thoroughly public dressing-down. (Ends at 3:07 in the linked video.) Many embarrassing situations provide comedy relief, but this scene turns it around--in a generally comedic film this embarrassing moment provides a scene of high tension and drama. Up to this point we've come to think that Rango can really do what he promises (several bumbling attempts do work out). This is Jake's first appearance in the story (although hinted at before now), and with just one short speech he strips Rango of all the good will he's built up. I think the shortness of this scene gives it some of its strength. Will finally overcomes his fears because Marcus was willing to commit social suicide for his mother. It is a very powerful scene.
