Yep. "Blue Velvet" was the first film that really creeped me out. I saw it in a theater and it affected everyone else the same way. A most weirded-out group left the theater that night.

And yet, Judy, there was a lot of over-the-top humor in the movie. In a way, I think Lynch was doing a social satire, themes he explored more overtly in the TV series "Twin Peaks". That's part of the magic of Blue Velvet, that he managed to pull off a number of tones, yet make them all work. Strange comparison, I know, but Gone Girl does a similar thing. Drama. Thriller. Satire. In fact, that would be an interesting analysis, comparing the two. What Blue Velvet did in pulling back the thin veneer of normalcy in a Small Town, USA, Gone Girl does for the Perfect Yuppie Poster Child Marriage. May be a blog post there...

Actually the Gone Girl comparison is a good one. Frankly, I've been knocked out by Gillian's three novels. What an amazing voice.
