He's done a great job at painting McClane's relationship status and connecting with his character. You are right, it wouldn't be half the movie if we didn't care about his character. The thing that stood out was the length of the exchange, he took his time painting the picture instead of a rushed few words.

One scene. All the writers needed to accomplish in one scene. Granted, this is an action movie, so the bar isn't necessarily all that high re character depth, but the writer has to do enough to create a connection for a reader.
