I still prefer the Batman/Joker dynamic in The Dark Knight. The relationship in 89 feels like the standard "good guy VS bad guy" type of thing, whereas in Dark Knight, it felt to me like there were more complex ideas bubbling under the surface. An example of that complexity is the idea of maintaining one's moral stance VS taking responsibility for the consequences of your actions. Is Batman responsible for The Joker, and, in effect, the chaos and destruction the Joker causes? If so; does Batman have an obligation to kill the Joker and end the suffering he's partially responsible for? Or; should Batman maintain his moral stance as a non lethal defender of the downtrodden; an example of unflinching, righteous moral standards and values, despite the countless people that puts in harms way? A much more interesting twist on the material, I think. I'm also not a fan of some of the dialogue choices in this version.
