I've been in a lot of writer's rooms and offices, and they almost always work with index cards. That's how Steven Bocho did it with "Hill Street Blues," "LA Law," "NYPD Blue," all those shows where they interweave two, three or four subplots, down to using color-coded index cards per each subplot.

Not saying someone has to use index cards or, honestly, do any prep-writing at all. I just think it's instructive to see all the pro writers who do map stories out in advance of writing. And in the TV world, it's absolutely essential.
