Just read the whole interview. It definitely is the best piece I've read so far. By far! Mr McQuarrie's honnesty is disarming and refreshing. It pins down the alienation there is in the end, when a screenwriter writes for projects which he has not chosen in the first place and what kind of career it brings. Having worked as career coach for the past 5 years, I can't begin to tell you how many professionals I met which had totally lost themselves on paths they had not chosen. Their success meant nothing to them any longer. They felt empty. Realizing early on who you want to be like, what kind of "you" you wish to be in 5, 10 years is key. The most difficult thing then is to compare what being offered to you to your goal at every cross road... And when money is involved, the choice might be excruciating.
