Scott, my all-time favorite movie Rocky has been taken, so I would love to do Rocky II or my other favorite 70's film The Godfather part II, or even both if possible!

Ryan, here's a thought: Would you be up to do both The Godfather, Part I and The Godfather, Part II? They are, in some ways, inseparable, and as far as covering movies from the 70s, both are essential. Scott, I’d like to tackle McCABE & MRS. MILLER (with a full understanding that Altman had a different attitude from the norm about the role of the “script” in his movie making). My hat is off to pgronk for tackling Chinatown. I’m new to this. However, I’ve broken down Chinatown seventeen ways from sideways, and each time I find a new wrinkle. The economic utility of every word in that script amazes me. I’ve often wondered, how would you do a ‘pitch’ for Chinatown. An elevator pitch? A two minute pitch? A frickin login, for Pete’s sake? Scott, considering how important “pitching” and concept development are for the spec script, I’m wondering if you’ve ever run a series on how some of the classics would be pitched? Better yet, are there accessible archives where the pitches developed contemporaneously with the project are available? I’ve looked high and low for real pitches for great movies and they seem hard to find.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller is an excellent choice and thanks for that. Creative juju below! As to pitching a movie like Chinatown? I know that emerged directly from Robert Towne who was fascinated by the history of Los Angeles, having grown up in, I believe, San Pedro. He was friends with Jack Nicholson who was friends with Roman Polanski. They partied together. If there was any pitching involved, I imagine it occurred amidst copious amounts of booze and/or drugs. Wikipedia notes this: "In 1971 producer Robert Evans offered Towne $175,000 to write a screenplay for The Great Gatsby (1974), but Towne felt he could not better the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Instead, Towne asked for $25,000 from Evans to write his own story, Chinatown, to which Evans agreed." The 70s was a very different era than today. Pitching had been around for decades, but with the emergence of Scorcese, DePalma, Coppola, Lucas, Spielberg, and the rest, the studios gave them a lot more free reign over their projects, especially in the early 70s. I don't know of any sites or archives such as the one you described, but Simply Scripts has a page where you can download a bunch of treatments. Now for the creative juju: SKOOOLABABANAHHH!
