A Jim Carrey quote from a commencement speech he made in May: "You can fail at what you don't want to do, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love." I've been putting this one on repeat in my head.

The journey is indeed long, you never actually arrive. Everyone who has sold a script has to keep going. Knowing that, it's easier to look at the legs in the journey and then, paid or not, you can mark your progress. As for staying motivated, the "do it or don't do it" is spot on. If you are a writer, you are going to write whether you eventually "break in" or not. You can't help it. If every page is a struggle you probably don't want to break in because then your livelihood depends on writing. It's why I'm a writer and not a muscian -- I love the idea of being a rockin' keyboard player, but to be good -- truly good -- I would have to practice and that's just not fun. I suspect that your question is because you love to tell stories but you're young and still working on your 10k pages and total committment to a dream is scary. Maybe it's not for you, but maybe it is. I hope it is. Dream chasers are awesome people to be around. But... you know.
